Rahul Gandhi Raises Questions Over Maharashtra Voter Roll, Revives ‘Vote Chori’ Charge

New Delhi : Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has once again raised questions over the electoral revision process in Maharashtra, after the draft voter list showed a reduction of around 2.07 crore electors.

Reacting to the figures on Tuesday, Gandhi accused the BJP and the Election Commission of repeatedly changing their approach while alleging that the larger objective was to ensure an electoral advantage for the ruling party.

Gandhi pointed to the sharp difference between the number of voters recorded during the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections and the latest draft figures released after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). He questioned which of the different electoral rolls should be considered accurate.

The Congress leader also linked the Maharashtra figures to his earlier allegations regarding voter-list changes in other states. He reiterated his demand for greater transparency in the electoral process and alleged that large-scale changes in voter rolls could have serious implications for democracy.

The Election Commission, however, has clarified that the figure of 2.07 crore should not be interpreted as the final number of voters who will be deleted, as the draft process includes claims, objections and verification.

The latest controversy has added another dimension to the ongoing political confrontation between the Congress and the BJP over electoral rolls and the functioning of the Election Commission.
